Disgraced Councillor Gurpreet Dhillon on the losing side in court once again and on taxpayer money
BRAMPTON, ON – Time and time again, Gurpreet Dhillon has cost tax paying residents of Brampton tens of thousands of dollars in court due to his unethical actions and lack of sound judgement.
On July 11, 2022, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice delivered a damning decision against Gurpreet Dhillon and five fellow Councillors who were breaking the rules of democracy. The Court held that six Brampton City Councillors acted illegally when they appointed Elaine Moore as City Councillor for Wards 7 and 8, and now need to pay $20,000.00.
On May 31, 2022, Gurpreet Dhillon along with five other Councillors passed an illegal motion to appoint Elaine Moore as a replacement Councillor for MPP Charmaine Williams, who at the time was a sitting Councillor. This illegal motion was passed against the advice of the City’s lawyer and City Clerk.
Subsequently, Gurpreet Dhillon got the City’s lawyer fired and proceeded with this move to hijack due democratic process. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice decision is a win for democratic procedures that ensure Canadians have a choice to determine their government representatives.
“If Councillor Dhillon wants to defend his reckless behaviour and lack of respect for the residents of Wards 9 and 10, he can challenge our democratic values by putting his name on the ballot for the upcoming City Council elections and test the free will of the people of Brampton,” said Gurpartap Singh Toor, Regional Councillor candidate for Wards 9 and 10.
“The good people of Brampton find success through hard work and maintain strong values. They deserve a representative who does not break the law to get ahead and make desperate attempts to save his own political career at taxpayers’ expense.”
